SECURITY ATLAS / EVALUATION BRIEF AWS IAM Identity Center Research reviewed: 2026-10-18 https://atlasofsecurity.com/landscape/vendors/aws-iam-identity-center/ THE ATLAS TAKE Atlas judgment: IAM Identity Center is a sensible starting point for workforce access to multiple AWS accounts and supported applications, especially when the organization already has an external identity provider. It can centralize assignments without requiring a new workforce directory. The important design work remains: choose the correct instance type, understand identity synchronization and map access to the right roles or permission sets. Do not confuse account assignments with customer identity or comprehensive governance. A leaver test must cover new sign-in, portal access and already-issued AWS credentials separately, because each represents a different point in the access lifecycle. SCOPE Identity Center can use an external identity provider and support customer-managed SAML applications. Scope account access, application assignments and provisioning separately; it is not a complete customer-identity or identity-governance product. WORTH A LOOK WHEN AWS organizations centralizing workforce account and supported application access while retaining an authoritative upstream identity provider. THINK TWICE WHEN The requirement is consumer identity or a substitute for application authorization, governance and session-revocation design. IMPLEMENTATION 1. Choose instance and identity authority Select the organization deployment and upstream source appropriate to the account and application requirements. 2. Model job-specific account access Define minimal role or permission-set assignments and review which accounts each group can reach. 3. Rehearse lifecycle and emergency access Test synchronization failures, worker termination and recovery procedures without relying on the same failing identity path. OPERATING REALITY Administrators must maintain upstream synchronization, group assignments and the AWS permissions those assignments expose. Atlas would review permission changes with account owners and rehearse upstream outage and emergency access; centralized assignment reduces repeated configuration but can also spread an overly broad role to many accounts. COMMERCIAL CONSIDERATIONS AWS states Identity Center is offered at no extra charge; still include upstream identity, related directory services and administration in the operating estimate. - External identity-provider or directory services - Related AWS services and application requirements - Permission engineering, synchronization and access review EVALUATION PLAN / PROPOSED TESTS, NOT COMPLETED RESULTS 1. Verify the resulting AWS authority Acceptance evidence: Assign a synthetic worker a narrow lab role and preserve successful permitted actions and denied actions outside that role. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 2. Remove upstream access deliberately Acceptance evidence: Disable the test worker and measure new sign-in, portal behavior and existing temporary credential usability as separate observations. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 3. Test assignment drift Acceptance evidence: Change a lab group and reconcile the expected account/application assignments against effective access and audit evidence. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ QUESTIONS FOR THE VENDOR - Which applications in the Identity Center catalog and which customer-managed SAML applications will you actually assign in the lab? - Which permission sets and account assignments provide required access without unnecessary standing administrator privilege? - If you also need customer identity or identity governance, which products remain outside Identity Center? EVIDENCE GAPS - No independent federation availability, synchronization timing or effective-permission assessment was performed. - Confirm regional availability, the selected account-access model and exact revocation controls for already-issued credentials.
