SECURITY ATLAS / EVALUATION BRIEF Chainguard Research reviewed: 2026-10-18 https://atlasofsecurity.com/landscape/vendors/chainguard/ THE ATLAS TAKE Chainguard supplies maintained container images designed around minimal contents and supply-chain evidence. This is a different job from scanning an application and reporting vulnerabilities: it changes the software foundation the application ships on. Atlas analysis: it is attractive when a platform team can standardize base images and own compatibility testing and updates. The practical tradeoff is migration work. Distroless images, different package-management conventions, runtime users, and entrypoints can affect existing builds and debugging. Evaluate the complete application lifecycle, including emergency diagnosis and rollback, rather than comparing base-image vulnerability counts alone. SCOPE Check artifact compatibility, update availability, and provenance policy. Hardened base artifacts do not replace static analysis of first-party application code or composition analysis of the dependencies added by that application. Provenance describes origin and build evidence, not freedom from bugs. WORTH A LOOK WHEN Platform teams standardizing maintained container foundations and prepared to adapt builds and update practices. THINK TWICE WHEN The requirement is an application scanner or a drop-in image replacement without compatibility and debugging validation. IMPLEMENTATION 1. Inventory image assumptions Record shell scripts, OS packages, user IDs, certificates, and runtime debugging needs. 2. Migrate a representative workload Use the documented development or full variant where appropriate, then minimize the runtime deliberately. 3. Establish update promotion Verify signatures and metadata, run tests, and retain a pinned rollback image. OPERATING REALITY Teams still build and test their applications, manage registry access, pin and refresh image versions, and handle runtime debugging. Atlas analysis: a maintained base image does not automatically update a deployed workload. Define how new images are tested, promoted, and rolled back through the release process. COMMERCIAL CONSIDERATIONS Compare production image access, version requirements, customization, support, and the engineering work needed for migration and updates. - Production image catalog and version access - Customization and support requirements - Build migration and ongoing update validation EVALUATION PLAN / PROPOSED TESTS, NOT COMPLETED RESULTS 1. Validate runtime compatibility Acceptance evidence: Run application, certificate, permissions, and entrypoint tests against the migrated image. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 2. Inspect supply-chain evidence Acceptance evidence: Verify the selected image digest, signature, and SBOM using the documented verification path. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 3. Rehearse a security update Acceptance evidence: Promote a new base image through tests, deployment, and a rollback drill without changing application code. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ QUESTIONS FOR THE VENDOR - Are Chainguard images compatible with the application's required packages, users, and entrypoints? - How is rebuild lag handled when upstream ships a fix the factory has not yet rebuilt? - What SAST of first-party code and SCA of included third-party dependencies still run after the base image is replaced? EVIDENCE GAPS - No independent vulnerability-count or runtime-performance comparison was performed. - Application compatibility and exact production-image entitlement require workload-specific validation.
