SECURITY ATLAS / EVALUATION BRIEF Cisco Duo Research reviewed: 2026-10-18 https://atlasofsecurity.com/landscape/vendors/cisco-duo/ THE ATLAS TAKE Atlas judgment: Duo is a useful shortlist candidate when an organization needs stronger authentication and access policy around existing applications or remote access without immediately replacing its directory. The value is specific to the protected integration and selected authentication method: a push prompt, phishing-resistant method and device-health requirement are not interchangeable outcomes. Duo is not a complete identity-governance program or privileged credential vault. Evaluate the actual application path, enrollment and recovery process, then verify what occurs when Duo or its integration is unavailable. A successful MFA demonstration is incomplete without understanding bypass settings and existing application sessions. SCOPE Duo is access security, not a full identity-governance or customer-identity platform. It integrates with Active Directory, virtual private networks, software-as-a-service, and Entra external authentication methods. It does not by itself certify entitlements or vault privileged passwords. WORTH A LOOK WHEN Teams adding MFA and contextual access policy to an existing identity and application estate. THINK TWICE WHEN The requirement is full entitlement certification, privileged password custody or a guarantee that adding MFA revokes existing sessions. IMPLEMENTATION 1. Inventory covered and bypass paths List the exact applications, VPNs and identity integrations and identify authentication routes that do not invoke Duo. 2. Design enrollment and recovery Choose approved methods, protect help-desk recovery and keep emergency accounts reviewed and auditable. 3. Stage application policy Pilot legitimate and denied access, outage behavior and session termination with the owners of each important integration. OPERATING REALITY Enrollment, authenticator recovery, integration health and exception policy remain customer work. Atlas would review bypass and recovery accounts with the same care as the primary method, because a strong routine sign-in can be undermined by an unmanaged alternate access path or an overly permissive outage setting. COMMERCIAL CONSIDERATIONS Price the required user population and edition; include integration and recovery operations rather than using MFA alone as the cost boundary. - Protected users and selected Duo edition - Device, adaptive and broader access features - Integration, enrollment and help-desk recovery effort EVALUATION PLAN / PROPOSED TESTS, NOT COMPLETED RESULTS 1. Prove the selected strong method Acceptance evidence: Use a synthetic identity and supported authenticator to retain successful and rejected sign-ins at the actual protected integration. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 2. Check bypass and outage policy Acceptance evidence: In an authorized lab, interrupt the integration’s Duo path and document whether access fails, bypasses or follows an approved recovery rule. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 3. Separate sign-in from sessions Acceptance evidence: Disable the test user and inspect both a new authentication and an already-open application session, recording the remaining access boundary. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ QUESTIONS FOR THE VENDOR - Which applications and virtual private networks in the lab actually honor Duo as an external method, including Entra external authentication if that is in play? - What happens when a device fails the health check, and who can override that in an authorized break-glass path? - Where will identity governance, customer identity, and privileged vaulting live, since Duo does not replace those products? EVIDENCE GAPS - No independent phishing-resistance, availability or recovery-process assessment was performed. - Confirm current integration-specific fail behavior, supported authenticators and edition entitlements before rollout.
