SECURITY ATLAS / EVALUATION BRIEF Delinea Secret Server Research reviewed: 2026-10-18 https://atlasofsecurity.com/landscape/vendors/delinea-secret-server/ THE ATLAS TAKE Atlas judgment: Secret Server is compelling when the immediate problem is unmanaged privileged credentials and the organization can support discovery, controlled checkout and reliable rotation. Its architecture distinguishes the vault’s central service from distributed engines that reach target networks. The critical engineering issue is dependencies: changing a service account password without updating its consumers can cause an outage. Evaluate credential custody and target-side rotation as separate outcomes, and keep the broader Delinea portfolio outside the assumed Secret Server package. A strong pilot should show a credential changing safely on the target and every required dependent service remaining usable. SCOPE This profile is vault-focused privileged access for human, machine, and described AI credential control. It is not a workforce identity provider. Treat platformization and identity-governance-adjacent features as separate modules to license and test. WORTH A LOOK WHEN Teams building a vault-centered privileged access program across segmented networks and known credential consumers. THINK TWICE WHEN The project treats password import as completed PAM or cannot identify applications that depend on rotated accounts. IMPLEMENTATION 1. Discover and classify accounts Identify privileged credentials, their owners, target systems and applications that consume each secret. 2. Design access and target reach Set folder/secret permissions, approvals and distributed-engine placement with narrowly scoped network and account authority. 3. Stage rotation with recovery Pilot changers and dependencies on disposable targets, then establish monitoring for drift, failed rotation and emergency use. OPERATING REALITY Secret ownership, permissions, distributed engine health and rotation exceptions need sustained administration. Atlas would maintain a dependency inventory and a tested emergency-access path before rotating critical accounts; a successful vault update is insufficient if the target rejected the change or a service still uses the old value. COMMERCIAL CONSIDERATIONS Quote the selected cloud or self-hosted package with target integrations, session scope and operational dependencies explicit. - Secret Server edition and privileged user scope - Cloud service or customer-managed infrastructure and engines - Discovery, rotation dependencies and session evidence EVALUATION PLAN / PROPOSED TESTS, NOT COMPLETED RESULTS 1. Prove target-side rotation Acceptance evidence: Rotate a synthetic lab credential and demonstrate that the new value works while the old value fails outside the vault. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 2. Preserve a dependent service Acceptance evidence: Rotate a test service account and verify the dependent service restarts successfully with an auditable update sequence. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 3. Detect a drift and engine failure Acceptance evidence: Change a lab password outside the vault and interrupt an engine, preserving alerts, ownership and a safe reconciliation procedure. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ QUESTIONS FOR THE VENDOR - Which capabilities in the quote are Secret Server vault features versus Delinea Platform modules that resemble identity governance? - How are machine and described AI credentials onboarded, rotated, and revoked without breaking a lab pipeline? - What is the exit path for exporting secrets metadata and audit logs if you later change vault products? EVIDENCE GAPS - Atlas did not independently test vault isolation, rotation reliability or disaster recovery. - Confirm the selected release, deployment-specific key custody, target changers and module entitlements before implementation.
