SECURITY ATLAS / EVALUATION BRIEF Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Research reviewed: 2026-10-18 https://atlasofsecurity.com/landscape/vendors/microsoft-defender-office-365/ THE ATLAS TAKE Defender for Office 365 is a natural baseline to examine in a Microsoft 365 estate, particularly when analysts already investigate in Defender. Plan 2 materially changes that conversation by adding investigation and automation beyond Plan 1. Atlas would prioritize policy coverage, quarantine authority and response evidence over a simple enabled-license check. The practical question is whether the team can explain what happened to a message and safely reverse a mistaken action. Existing Microsoft purchases should prompt an entitlement review before another email platform is added. SCOPE Plan 2 is the scored scope. Exchange Online filtering, Plan 1 and Plan 2 are not interchangeable; cross-product endpoint response and additional identity products are outside this assessment. WORTH A LOOK WHEN Microsoft 365 teams seeking integrated email investigation and documented response controls. THINK TWICE WHEN The primary requirement is protection for an unrelated mail platform or an independently operated gateway. IMPLEMENTATION 1. Inventory actual licenses Map protected users and required investigation features to the purchased service plans; include shared-mailbox requirements. 2. Map policy precedence Review presets, custom policies and exceptions against representative users and domains before enabling stricter handling. 3. Assign message ownership Document release approval, user-report triage and recovery from mistaken remediation across mail administration and the SOC. OPERATING REALITY Mail administrators and SOC analysts share the operating burden. Someone must maintain authentication records, policy exceptions and quarantine release rules, while responders investigate campaigns and user reports. Broad allow entries can undermine that work; exceptions should have an owner, evidence and a review date. COMMERCIAL CONSIDERATIONS Compare existing bundle entitlements with the exact Plan 2 capabilities required. Include analyst and mail-administration work in the cost comparison; feature overlap alone does not establish operational value. - Licensed users and selected plan - Integration and policy migration effort - Investigation, release and exception workload EVALUATION PLAN / PROPOSED TESTS, NOT COMPLETED RESULTS 1. Trace a synthetic impersonation message Acceptance evidence: Keep headers, applied policy, verdict and delivery location. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 2. Test a release request with two roles Acceptance evidence: Record permissions, approval and the final mailbox state. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 3. Investigate a small synthetic campaign Acceptance evidence: Preserve Explorer evidence, related-message scope and a reversible response record. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ QUESTIONS FOR THE VENDOR - Which users and shared mailboxes require the selected license? - Who can inspect message content and approve release? - Which collaboration workloads receive the same policy and which have different behavior? EVIDENCE GAPS - No independent detection or analyst-effort benchmark was performed by Atlas. - Confirm tenant-specific policy precedence and complete licensing before deployment.
