SECURITY ATLAS / EVALUATION BRIEF Microsoft Sentinel Research reviewed: 2026-10-18 https://atlasofsecurity.com/landscape/vendors/microsoft-sentinel/ THE ATLAS TAKE Atlas judgment: Sentinel is compelling when an organization can turn its Microsoft identity, endpoint and cloud context into a maintained investigation system, while retaining a credible plan for third-party telemetry. Its advantage is the combination of KQL, connectors, detection content and the Defender operating surface. The purchase still leaves a substantial engineering job: choose which records deserve analytics, preserve the fields that detections need, and control response permissions. Evaluate the new platform and data-lake capabilities individually; a broad platform description does not prove that your required workflow is generally available or included. SCOPE This profile covers Sentinel analytics and investigation. Data tiers, automation and adjacent Microsoft security products have their own configuration and commercial boundaries; a Microsoft environment alone does not establish that every source or feature is included. WORTH A LOOK WHEN Microsoft-oriented security teams with KQL skills, named detection owners and a deliberate multicloud collection strategy. THINK TWICE WHEN The expected outcome is a staffed SOC, predictable spending without data engineering, or automatic parity across every connector. IMPLEMENTATION 1. Design the evidence contract Map two investigation questions to exact sources, tables, identity fields and retention windows before selecting broad ingestion defaults. 2. Build a narrow operating slice Connect a small tenant, validate event times and identities, and require a named maintainer for each detection and connector. 3. Constrain the response path Separate query permissions from disruptive actions and rehearse an approval, failure and rollback path before enabling automation. OPERATING REALITY The managed service removes SIEM server administration, but the customer still owns source permissions, connector health, normalization, rule maintenance and incident decisions. Atlas would assign both a detection engineer and a cost owner before production ingestion, because dropping a costly table can also remove the evidence a rule depends on. COMMERCIAL CONSIDERATIONS Microsoft publishes consumption and commitment models; obtain an estimate using your actual table mix rather than assuming all retained data has one rate. - Analytics ingestion and commitment utilization - Lake storage, query scanning and optional compute - Logic Apps, connector infrastructure and engineering effort EVALUATION PLAN / PROPOSED TESTS, NOT COMPLETED RESULTS 1. Reconstruct a cross-source incident Acceptance evidence: Preserve a fabricated Entra sign-in and third-party application event, the KQL join, an intentionally missing identifier and the resulting analyst timeline. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 2. Demonstrate collection failure Acceptance evidence: Stop a lab source and show the health signal, detection impact, recovery time and accounting for records that were never received. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 3. Reconcile usage with the design Acceptance evidence: Run a representative lab data mix and reconcile analytics, lake and automation usage with the cost estimate before extrapolating production. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ QUESTIONS FOR THE VENDOR - Which connector, table and data tier support each planned detection? - How will ingestion, retention, querying and automation contribute to the bill? - Who maintains analytics rules and approves actions outside the SIEM? EVIDENCE GAPS - No independent detection efficacy, analyst productivity or cost benchmark was performed for this dossier. - Confirm regional availability, preview status and entitlements for each graph, MCP or agent workflow in the actual tenant.
