SECURITY ATLAS / EVALUATION BRIEF PingFederate / PingOne Research reviewed: 2026-10-18 https://atlasofsecurity.com/landscape/vendors/ping-identity/ THE ATLAS TAKE Atlas judgment: PingFederate and PingOne deserve evaluation when the identity architecture must bridge mixed directories, applications and trust relationships rather than standardize on a single simple login path. PingFederate’s federation-server model offers explicit adapters and standards-based integration, while PingOne services can change the hosting and policy boundary. That flexibility demands design expertise. A proposal should show where authentication occurs, where attributes come from and which system establishes the final application session. Keep software and cloud entitlements distinct, and do not assume a supported protocol proves the target application’s full login, logout and recovery behavior. SCOPE Design the PingOne versus PingFederate split explicitly. ForgeRock-origin capabilities appear in Ping's family unless a live contract still names ForgeRock. Government-cloud authorization claims need a current package check, not a brochure. WORTH A LOOK WHEN Complex enterprise federation and hybrid identity environments with engineers able to maintain adapters and application trust relationships. THINK TWICE WHEN The organization wants a minimal-administration cloud directory and cannot support federation software or customized integration. IMPLEMENTATION 1. Choose software versus cloud responsibilities Record PingFederate and PingOne roles, hosting, authoritative directories and application trust boundaries. 2. Build a small federation contract Define required attributes, signing trust, audience and session behavior for one representative application. 3. Operate key and integration changes Version adapters and policy, monitor failures and rehearse certificate rotation plus emergency access. OPERATING REALITY Trust configuration, signing certificates, adapters and application-session behavior require coordinated ownership. Atlas would maintain an inventory of federation dependencies and rehearse key rotation with application owners, because a valid identity service can still fail users when a partner trust or final application integration breaks. COMMERCIAL CONSIDERATIONS Price the exact federation server and cloud services, including required OAuth capabilities and deployment support. - PingFederate and selected PingOne capabilities - Hosting, availability and non-production environments - Adapter development, key rotation and specialist operations EVALUATION PLAN / PROPOSED TESTS, NOT COMPLETED RESULTS 1. Trace a federation transaction Acceptance evidence: Retain the synthetic identity’s source attributes, issued assertion or token and application-side validation result. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 2. Rotate a trust credential Acceptance evidence: Rehearse signing-certificate rollover in a lab and prove continued legitimate access without accepting the retired trust indefinitely. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ 3. Test application session termination Acceptance evidence: End the identity session and separately inspect the application session, documenting any remaining access and the required remediation. Owner: __________ Pass criterion: __________ Observed result: __________ Evidence location: __________ QUESTIONS FOR THE VENDOR - Which policies, adapters, and token exchanges live on PingFederate versus PingOne in the proposed architecture? - If a contract still names ForgeRock, which capabilities are actually in the current Ping family you would operate? - For any FedRAMP or Department of Defense impact-level claim, what is the current authorization package rather than the marketing statement? EVIDENCE GAPS - No independent federation-resilience or integration-effort measurement was performed. - Confirm the selected server version, cloud service mix and contractual support for every adapter and protocol capability.
