The job to be done
Understand what happened on a managed endpoint and take a proportionate, reversible response.
Endpoint detection and response records activity on supported computers and helps analysts investigate suspicious behavior. A process tree can connect a document, the program it launched and subsequent network activity. Depending on the product, operating system and license, responders may isolate a host or collect additional evidence. EDR complements prevention; it does not make every device observable. Plan sensor deployment, privacy controls, operating-system support and response authority before using containment on business-critical equipment.
What goes in
- Process and file activity
- Endpoint network connections
- Device inventory and agent health
What should come out
- Device alerts and process relationships
- Investigation artifacts
- Controlled containment and remediation actions
Inside the segment
These capabilities answer different questions. Use the distinction to define the work before assembling a shortlist.
Endpoint prevention
Block or limit unwanted behavior using supported endpoint protection controls.
Boundary: Prevention licensing does not automatically include the investigation functions of EDR.
Endpoint investigation
Search host events, timelines and related activity to understand an alert.
Boundary: Visibility depends on the deployed sensor, operating system and retained event types.
Extended detection
Correlate endpoint observations with other supported security signals.
Boundary: XDR coverage and third-party data access depend on integrations and product editions.
Managed endpoint response
Add a service team to monitor and respond within an agreed scope.
Boundary: A software license alone does not supply staffed response or incident recovery.
How the work flows
Define the estate
Inventory operating systems, device roles, owners and systems that cannot accept a sensor.
Pilot the sensor
Deploy to representative test hosts and measure health, application compatibility and resource use.
Investigate an alert
Reconstruct relevant events, compare a benign baseline and document the analyst conclusion.
Authorize a response
Confirm the affected service and obtain the required approval before isolating a lab host.
Recover and learn
Restore connectivity, preserve evidence and record changes needed in policies or operations.
The environment changes the question
Use these scenarios to adapt the evaluation to your organization. They describe operational concerns, not a determination of compliance.
Finance ↗
Investigate a synthetic privileged sign-in followed by access to a fictional payment administration system.
Evaluate: Preserve who approved access and which actions occurred without copying real customer records into the exercise.
Utilities ↗
Trace a simulated remote maintenance session crossing the boundary between business systems and an operations support host.
Evaluate: Coordinate response decisions with operations staff and keep safety systems outside automatic containment.
Manufacturing ↗
Follow a fictional supplier account accessing a test engineering workstation before a scheduled production change.
Evaluate: Check support dependencies, maintenance windows and the operational effect of disabling the account or host.
Healthcare ↗
Investigate synthetic access to a training clinical application from an unusual workstation.
Evaluate: Use fabricated patient data and involve clinical operations before testing disruptive response actions.
What drives the operating cost
- Licensed endpoints, servers and operating-system classes, including optional XDR modules.
- Event retention, investigation features, response entitlements and managed-service additions.
- Deployment engineering, agent upgrades, compatibility testing and analyst workload.
Questions worth asking
- Which operating systems and versions support each required action?
- What impact does the sensor have on our workloads?
- Can a responder isolate a test device and safely restore connectivity?
Common assumptions to check
An endpoint agent makes every asset observable.
Unsupported devices and missing telemetry remain visibility gaps that need other controls.
Buying EDR buys a response team.
Analysts and service coverage must be staffed or separately contracted; response responsibilities still need agreement.
APPLY THE IDEA / EVALUATION PLAN
Make the outcome observable.
In an authorized test environment, exercise a harmless behavior, inspect the resulting process evidence, and test a reversible containment procedure.
Test visibility safely
Use an approved benign test sequence and verify the expected host and timeline fields.
Test a lab isolation
Document approval, expected network effects, evidence retained and a successful restoration.
Compare platform support
Complete the same harmless exercise on each planned operating-system family and record capability differences.
Use synthetic data and an authorized test environment. Record scope, product edition, permissions, results, and recovery behavior.
Vendors & products
14 profilesAn editorial selection of relevant offerings, with documented scope and practical evaluation questions. Atlas Fold provides a separate provisional documentation assessment for selected offerings; inclusion in this directory is not a ranking.
Microsoft / Endpoint detection and response
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Plan 2
Plan 2 includes EDR capabilities absent from Plan 1. Defender for Business and server coverage have separate licensing considerations; response functions also differ by operating system.
CrowdStrike / Endpoint detection and response
Falcon Insight XDR
The endpoint sensor, Insight XDR entitlement and optional hunting or Falcon Complete managed service represent different parts of the purchase. Confirm the licensed capabilities and supported platforms.
SentinelOne / Endpoint detection and response
Singularity Endpoint
Evaluate the endpoint package separately from identity, mobile and Wayfinder managed-service offerings. A general rollback claim does not establish recovery coverage for every operating system or workload.
Palo Alto Networks / Endpoint detection and response
Cortex XDR
The endpoint agent and broader XDR analytics have different deployment and licensing considerations. Unit 42 managed detection and response is a separate service, not an automatic part of endpoint software.
Sophos / Endpoint detection and response
Sophos EDR
Confirm the current Sophos Central product and edition instead of relying on older Intercept X packaging. Sophos MDR and the acquired Secureworks portfolio require separate scope and service evaluation.
Trend Micro / Endpoint detection and response
TrendAI Vision One Endpoint Security
TrendAI is Trend Micro’s enterprise business identity. Verify the endpoint package, integrations and supported operating systems; advertised legacy or IoT coverage does not establish support for industrial controllers.
Trellix / Endpoint detection and response
Trellix EDR with Forensics
Endpoint prevention, EDR, forensic functions and ePO deployment options need explicit package mapping. Verify current compatibility documentation; the accepted research had limited direct access to some Trellix product material.
Bitdefender / Endpoint detection and response
GravityZone EDR
GravityZone EDR, enterprise bundles, XDR extensions and managed response have different entitlements. Confirm supported workstation and server platforms and the protection components included in the proposed package.
ESET / Endpoint detection and response
ESET Inspect
Inspect is an XDR-enabling module rather than a replacement for every endpoint protection component. Cloud and on-premises options exist; verify the selected deployment, licensing and supported operating-system releases.
WithSecure / Endpoint detection and response
Elements Endpoint Detection and Response
Elements EDR and endpoint protection packaging should be confirmed together. WithSecure carries the enterprise F-Secure lineage after the business and consumer separation; current platform support requires direct documentation checks.
Elastic / Endpoint detection and response
Elastic Defend
Elastic Defend is the endpoint integration, distinct from the broader Elastic SIEM. Deployment requires the appropriate Elastic Stack or serverless environment, Fleet management and attention to licensed response capabilities.
Broadcom / Endpoint detection and response
Carbon Black Cloud Enterprise EDR
Carbon Black is a Broadcom division. Cloud Enterprise EDR and the separate Carbon Black EDR deployment are distinct offerings; endpoint prevention and other cloud modules need explicit package verification.
Arctic Wolf / Endpoint detection and response
Aurora Endpoint Defense
Confirm the exact Aurora endpoint product, deployment path and operating-system support. Ownership of Cylance assets does not mean endpoint software automatically includes Aurora MDR or a particular response-service commitment.
Cisco / Endpoint detection and response
Cisco Secure Endpoint
Essentials, Advantage and Premier editions have different capabilities. Cisco XDR integration and Talos hunting entitlements need verification; a product license does not automatically establish a managed incident-response commitment.
